Coqualeetza Elders Group (CEG)
Some members of Skowkale First Nation Band started interviewing, recording and documenting Stó:lō people regarding their language and culture. These individuals efforts and activities became known as the Skulkayn Heritage Project; then in turn the Coqualeetza Elders Group.
One cannot help to recognize the value of our Coqualeetza Elders Group to our communities and to the preservation of our Halq’eméylem language and Stó:lō culture. The origins CEG original group began from 1973 and now their descendants have been constant providers of research information and wise leadership to the staff and Board of Directors since the founding of the CCEC in 1973.
Meetings are held each Wednesday, where up to 20 elders gather from 11:00am to 3:00pm to:
- Share their knowledge and experience in traditional activities and food preservation,
- Initiate fundraising activities to assist with their expenses for their cultural exchange trips,
- Assist local agencies such as Lower Fraser Fisheries (LFFA) regarding Revitalizing Indigenous Law publication; Primary Care discussion and interviews through First Nation Health Authority,
- Host guest speakers, other elders groups and local First Nation Chiefs and Council,
- Assist and provide support with the Residential School research project,
- Discuss family and community histories,
- Share a healthy meal prepared by CCEC Elder Coordinator,
- Create giveaways and gifts for speakers and guests,
- Participate in local community events such as; Chilliwack Action Team Overdose Prevention event and Harm Reduction and Safe Supply Annual Workshop for Narcan CCEC.
Elders constantly remind us that they want to be a part of the planning and implementation of CCEC programs and services designed for their benefit. The CEG continue to provide support in culture and language.
